Continuing to subvert notions of what kinds of music can be embraced by a jazz audience, the San Francisco Jazz Festival presents the internationally acclaimed cellist Ralph Kirshbaum performing the entire cycle of Johann Sebastian Bach's Suites for Unaccompanied Cello over the course of two nights, October 27 and 29. The majestic splendor of San Francisco's landmark Grace Cathedral, enhanced with specially designed dramatic lighting, provides the setting for Kirshbaum's tour de force.

Jazz musicians have always drawn inspiration from their classical peers and forebears, citing such influences as Stravinsky, Bartok, Debussy, and Stockhausen. More than a few, including bassist/cellist Ron Carter, have reached to Bach and the Cello Suites in particular for their lessons in tone and technique.
