Grammy Award winner and world-reknowned jazz vibraphonist Gary Burton has
been long recognized as an important leader in music education. As Dean
of Curriculum at Berklee College of Music, a position he has held for the
past ten years, following fifteen years on Berklee's faculty, he guided
the establishment of numerous new programs and majors at the school including
the Music Business/Management major and the recently created Music Therapy
major. In particular, Burton has been influential in developing Berklee's
applications of music technology throughout the college.
Now, this diversely talented jazz musician has made a major new commitment
to the college with his appointment as Executive Vice President - a
new position for the college established in the Office of the President.
This recognition came about for Burton as the college completed its year-long
50th Anniversary celebration commemorating Berklee's advancements in contemporary
music education from 1945 to 1995.
"I'm very lucky" said Burton during a recent phone interview.
"Both as a player who still travels and performs, and as an administrator
here at the college, I have been fortunate enough to work with nothing but
the best. Our team at Berklee has long held, and continues to hold, their
well deserved reputation in contemporary music education, and I'm happy
to be devoting more of my time and energy here."
Burton also retains his widespread fame as a prominent jazz musician. With
more than 50 record releases, countless guest appearances, 3 Grammy's, and
countless awards and other recognitions, this artist maintains a lively
pace which would tire many.
"It's funny, I get more rest when I'm on
the road," he remarked when asked how he keeps up with it all. "But
both performing and working at the college - two careers if you will - bring
me enormous satisfaction. I can't imagine a better life."
We'll keep our eye on Gary Burton, a visionary educator and innovative artist
who is equally at home on a jazz festival stage or in the lecture hall.
