JEFF KALISS was brought up in Bar Harbor, Maine by a classical piano-teaching mother, but found a 45 of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" b/w "Blue Rondo A La Turk" when he took a ferry-and-bicycle trip to Nova Scotia. He discovered even more jazz at Boston University, where he also [started] doing feature articles and reviews for the college paper. Since coming West, he's served as editor of the Bay Area Jazz Society's newsletter and has written about jazz, world musics, classical [and country-and-western] music[s], film, and theater for the San Francisco Chronicle & Examiner, San Jose Mercury-News, Oakland Tribune, Marin Independent-Journal, Focus magazine, San Diego Union-Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Jazz Times, and Jazziz. He's also authored liner notes, program notes for the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the introduction to photographer Lee Tanner's "Dizzy: John Birks Gillespie in His 75th Year" (Pomegranate, 1993). Jeff currently lives with his wife Louise Whitlock in San Francisco and is working on his own books about jazz and world musics.
